ABOUT SAYA

Born in Japan, Saya Sakakibara's life in BMX began at the age of four after following her brother Kai to a race.

The Sakakibara family moved to Sydney, Australia in 2007, and with Kai, Saya joined the local BMX club, Southlake Illawarra BMX Club.  Saya had an immediate impact on the junior circuit winning multiple state and national junior titles. 

Making her elite World Championship debut at the age of 18 in 2018, Saya won her way to the final where she finished sixth. She also finished runner up in the overall 2018 World Cup Series.

In 2019, she claimed multiple top-five finishes across the 2019 World Cup rounds as well as seventh at the World Championships.

The ‘Australian Cycling Team’ encompasses the Olympic and Paralympic cycling discipline athletes, coaches and performance support staff who will receive program support for Track and Para, and Individual Athlete Performance Support for Road and BMX.
