A dual junior World Champion in 2010, Matthew Glaetzer claimed a stunning victory at the 2012 World Championships in Melbourne alongside Scott Sunderland and Shane Perkins in the team sprint.
Making his Olympic debut at the London 2012 Games, Glaetzer and teammates Sunderland and Perkins qualified third fastest (43.377 seconds) in the team sprint. They then defeated China in the first round with their time of 43.26secs which set up a bronze medal showdown with Germany where they were narrowly beaten by by 0.146 seconds. Glaetzer added Commonwealth Games gold (keirin) and bronze (team sprint) to his growing list of achievements in 2014. At the 2016 World Championships, Glaetzer qualified fastest in the sprint before moving through the field and eventually claimed silver behind Great Britain’s Jason Kenny. Alongside Rio teammates Nathan Hart and Pat Constable the trio finished fifth in the team event, missing the medal rounds by just one millisecond. Competing in his second Olympic Games in Rio, Glaetzer was edged by British rider Callum Skinner in his sprint semi-final before going down to Russia’s Denis Dmitriev for bronze. Along with Constable and Hart, Glaetzer just finished off the podium in fourth in the team sprint by 0.155 seconds and claimed tenth in the keirin. Glaetzer kicked off his 2018 season with four gold in the keirin, sprint and team sprint, and time trial at the 2018 Track Nationals in Brisbane before claiming a memorable maiden individual world title victory in the sprint, in addition to claiming silver in the time trial. To open the 2018/19 World Cup season, Glaetzer grabbed three sprint gold and one silver. The Australian also clocked a 9.502sec flying 200 in the opening round, just shy of his 9.459sec personal best set five years ago (at altitude). In November 2019, Glaetzer was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, with the South Australian dual world champion and dual Olympian undergoing surgery to remove the cancerous growth. Just one month later during the 2019/20 World Cup season in December, Glaetzer took bronze in the keirin in New Zealand before winning keirin silver and sprint bronze in Brisbane. Glaetzer was a late withdrawal from the 2020 World Championships after sustaining a leg injury at training in February. MAJOR RESULTSOLYMPIC GAMES
