SAM WELSFORD | Northern BEACHES CC (WA)

Having begun riding when he was 8, Sam Welsford (born 19/01/1996) showed his potential as a junior winning back-to-back team pursuit world titles in 2013 and 2014. He would soon get his chance in the senior ranks and it wasn’t long before Welsford claimed World Cup gold.

He was a part of the Australian team that were victorious at the 2016 World Championships in London, helping him to book his spot for his first Olympic Games in Rio.

There, Welsford helped the Aussies finish third in qualification before they won their first round clash with Denmark to move through to the final where they took on Great Britain for gold. The Aussies went out hard but the British reeled them in and took the win while breaking the world record as Welsford, Michael Hepburn, Alex Edmondson, Jack Bobridge and Callum Scotson took home silver.

With Alex Porter, Leigh Howard and Kelland O’Brien, Sam teamed to become the first team in history to break the three-minute (3:49.804) fifty-second barrier on their way to winning gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The quartet then smashed this at the 2019 Track Worlds Championships in Podium with 3min 48.012sec, with Welsford winning two golds in the space of 30 minutes at the Championships after taking top honours in the men's scratch.

At the 2020 Track Worlds Championships in Germany, Porter, Welsford, Howard, Scott and Plapp (3:50.015) fell just two-hundredths of a second off the podium when they finished fourth.
